The house from across the water on a clear morning, deck and pontoon on still canal

The AnchorageHouse

A private house on still water.

28°10'17"S 153°32'45"E

Day beds on the hardwood deck beside the pool, late afternoon sun down the canal

The house sits low on the canal, the pool set at the water's edge and the glass folded back so the rooms and the deck become one. Mornings are still. Afternoons are long. For as long as you stay, it is yours alone.

The pool and day beds with a boat on the pontoon and the canal running to open water

The house

Two storeys arranged along a single hardwood deck. The glass walls fold away entirely, and the difference between the living rooms and the deck stops mattering. The water is in every sightline.

The bedrooms sit at the far end, away from where people gather. Upstairs opens to a balcony over the canal. Downstairs runs out to the pool.

On the water

The pool is built to the edge of the canal. Swimming in it, you are level with the water beyond it.

The deck is silvered hardwood — day beds along the pool, a long table in the shade. A pontoon sits at the end of the lawn, for a kayak in the morning or a boat brought alongside.

The bar room seen from the deck, backlit shelving, leather banquette and servery window

The bar

A second sitting room, set apart from the main house. A bar along one wall, a leather banquette facing it, a servery window through to the deck.

The room is built to hold its own sound. The rest of the house stays quiet.

Heat & ice

A cedar sauna and a timber ice bath sit on the lawn beside the house. The garage is fitted as a gym.

Sauna, then ice, then the pool. The whole sequence is twenty paces from the deck.
